Sustainability is now on everybody’s mind. But the real meaning of this word is often hidden behind this empty phrase.
In many places changes in our environment are already visible and forecasted further changes due to our behaviour show dramatic results, so that we come up against these consequences only with rapid and focused actions.
Construction from the viewpoint of sustainability can be an approach. Economic, environmental, social and functional aspects are considered in the detailed planning as well as in the overall decision in a balanced way. A further burdening of the environment for cost reasons thus seems to be excluded.
However, in the consequent practice this approach often fails because varied decision processes, practiced behavioural patterns and differentiated responsibilities are supporting the relapse into well tried, familiar patterns and methodologies.
